MedStar Southern Maryland has a strong partnership with neurosurgeons and neurologists from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Our award-winning performance in stroke care is ranked among the top 10 stroke programs in Maryland and was the first in the Southern Maryland region to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the state of Maryland.
Cancer
Making advancements in cancer technology
In February 2020, MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center opened its doors to our community, complete with a ZAP-X linear accelerator, one of three hospitals on the east coast to have the technology, as well as a Halcyon™ image-guided radiation system. Our cancer program is also accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC).
Heart
A strong alliance for our heart patients
In 2018, we became a part of the prestigious MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute — Cleveland Clinic Alliance, which allows us to offer more advanced treatment to our patients on top of our renowned service like our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, which is the site of life-saving interventions for heart attack patients, elective angioplasties, and diagnostic procedures.

  Our enhanced obstetrics and gynecology program includes private rooms and the region's only Level II Special Care Nursery allowing our on-site physicians from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to care for infants born as early as 32 weeks.
