JOB DESCRIPTION

The MedStar Health Baltimore Integrated Surgery Department is seeking board certified/board eligible general surgeons with excellent clinical skills, enthusiasm, and collaborative spirits to join our growing Acute Care Surgery team. Our vision is to become the premier clinical surgical program in the region, and the Acute Care Surgery team is helping us realize that goal.

Those who have completed acute care surgery and/or surgical critical care fellowships are preferred, but we strongly encourage applications from all general surgeons with a passion for emergency general surgery.

Our patients are ill, are from widely varying backgrounds, and deserve the best care available in Baltimore. Surgeons on the ACS team have the opportunity to treat them acutely, manage their inpatient and follow-up care along with general surgery residents and advanced practice providers, and ensure they receive outstanding multidisciplinary care while taking home call, avoiding the burdens of building an elective surgical practice, and helping to develop this clinical model within the regional department of surgery. Individual personal development in leadership, clinical research, and surgical education is supported and encouraged.

There’s very little trauma, but surgeons can expect 2-4 emergency general surgery operative cases per call day while still having time away from the hospitals. Our residents are hardworking, smart, energetic, and have a strong desire to learn. The surgical advance practice providers support the service in and out of the operating room. OR staff and nursing are friendly, responsive, and highly skilled. The current acute care surgeons are well regarded by all and are eager to add outstanding surgeons to our team.

MedStar Health is a large, not-for-profit healthcare corporation providing services in Maryland and the District of Columbia, and faculty appointments are available with Georgetown University’s School of Medicine. As part of their Distributed Care Delivery Network, MedStar operates four acute care hospitals providing inpatient services in the Baltimore region: MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital, MedStar Harbor Hospital, and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.

The hospitals are among the top community teaching hospitals in the United States, are home to emergency departments seeing more than 200,000 patients annually, specialty centers in bariatric surgery, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, gynecology, oncology, orthopedics, rehabilitation, and wound healing, and a general surgery residency program that is more than 100 years old.

Interested candidates should apply now or forward a current curriculum vitae to:
